1. Poetic Devices Analysis
Man-Woman is a kind of Diamante syllable/word-count poems. A Diamante Poem follows a very specific format – there are seven lines, and each line must have a specific number and type of words. When it’s finished, the poem will be in the shape of a diamond as shown below:
- Line 1 = Topic (noun)
- Line 2 = Two describing words (adjectives)
- Line 3 = Three action words (-ing verbs)
- Line 4 = Four words: Two words about the topic and two words that are opposite of those in line 2
- Line 5 = Three action words for the ending noun (-ing verbs)
- Line 6 = Two words to describe ending noun (adjectives)
- Line 7 = Ending noun (opposite of Line 1)
2. Connotations
Lukacs employed some connotations words in his poem, i.e. car, speaking, furious and exhausted. The word car in line 4 refers to luxury. Unlike woman who loves money without working hard, man works hard to reach what he wants in his life such as car or money. The poet employed this word to describe that man is mostly full of wealth. Man is also a symbol of perfectness. While in line 5 and 6, he describes woman as someone who always talks much in facing any trouble without thinking deeply before doing anything.
3. Tone
The tone of this poem is discriminatory or prejudiced. The poet tried to generalize the capability of woman.
4. Diction
Each word of this poem is selected for particular reason, especially to meet the format of a diamante poem (arranged in seven line and the result is formed a diamond).
5. Symbol
a. The symbols in this poem have already been caught clearly by the reader. The poet wants to describe the man and woman. How they are different in any situation and condition. Using the word brilliant, he described that man is a person who is intelligent and smart. This statement is absolutely true, we know that many of inventors in this world are men. Most of presidents in this world are men. The leaders of company are also men. Lukacs is not wrong to say that man is brilliant. Perfect, the poet wants to say that a man is a perfect human with brilliant ideas in his mind. A man also likes thinking to speaking too much like woman in fact. Lukacs not only describes man as a symbol of perfectness but also a symbol of people who like working hard.
b. In contrast, the word woman symbolizes something imperfect. Lukacs saw the reality of woman’s characteristics in describing her. Using the word make-up, he conveyed that woman cannot be separated from lotion et al. Woman’s life is also not completed without mirror in her bag. Wherever she goes, she never forgets to bring mirror. To support his idea, Lukacs repeats the word speaking three times. It indicates that woman not only wastes her time in front of mirror, she also like spending her time by speaking something unimportant. Afterwards, the poet completed his description with the word furious and exhausted; he once again emphasizes that woman is truly a symbol of imperfectness. After sitting beautifully in front of mirror for hours and speaking too much, woman likes being angry. We know in fact that many women especially wives get angry without any clear reason.
6. Repetition
The poet recurrences the word speaking three times. By reading this, it is expected that the readers will know the real condition of woman. They always speak, speak, and speak anytime and anywhere. Not only that, to emphasize his idea, the poet also added the word furious and exhausted to define woman’s characteristics who loves being in lazy time.
7. Conventional
Since this poem is a diamante poem, it is categorized as conventional literary form. It has become conventional that a diamante poem is unrhymed seven-line with certain syllables.
8. Point of view
In this poem, we can see that the writer wants to remind us to be a perfect and brilliant human like a man. The writer also noted not to be lazy like woman who only loves speaking and being angry anytime and anywhere.
9. Content
a. Theme
This poem gives us description of being a perfect and imperfect man. The poet uses the word woman to illustrate something imperfect who likes bullshitting and being in lazy times. The poet tells the readers to be like a man who likes working hard and being a wonderful man. In short, the theme of this poem is discrimination of gender.
b. Messages
Lukacs tells us that woman really loves speaking to working and man is perfectly a hard worker. From this poem we can learn that we should work hard and we should not speak much without doing anything. In short, Lukacs wants to say ‘talk less do more’, and ‘prove your power’.
10.Comment
We even can make a diamante poem by ourselves. The diamante poem is arranged in a diamond pattern using seven lines in the following manner:
a. LINE 1 one word subject (noun)
b. LINE 2 two adjectives describing LINE 1 noun
c. LINE 3 three participles ending in -ing or -ed to decribe LINE I noun
d. LINE 7 one word growing out of or opposite to LINE 1 noun (another noun)
e. LINE 6 two adjectives describing LINE 7 noun
f. LINE 5 three participles ending in -ing or -ed to describe LINE 7 noun
g. LINE 4 four words - two related to the noun in LINE 1 and two related to the noun in LINE 7; they be arranged concurrently or alternately, as the originator of the poem wishes.
The result is a pattern of contrast shown in poetry form. By allowing the students the additional option of selecting and creating their own graphic designs, the completed poem is at once both a unique and individual expression of response.
